WHO SHOULD APPLY?

We are looking for New Yorkers rooted in place-based local movements. People with solid organizing experience aiming to scale-up their work. People who have gotten their hands dirty and whose experiences position them as knowledge sharers. We seek to form a transdisciplinary cohort that stands the test of time by bringing together folks operating within various concrete communities, who are willing to listen and learn from others who think differently; people who are not rigid about their own thinking, but curious and open to play-and-grapple with challenging ideas around the shaping of cities.

Our peers could be:

  • Organizers with formal or informal leadership roles in neighborhood, workplace or issue-based organizations and coalitions;

  • Cultural workers, artists, and/or writers already engaged in debates around the city’s future;

  • Popular educators, community advocates, and/or grassroots activists.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Certificate in Cultures of Urban Advocacy

  • Stipend of $10,000 over 15 months and additional childcare support on a case by case basis;

  • A project fund to produce your final project responding to one or more of the challenges discussed in your applications as a group;

  • Access to resources and spaces through anchor institutional partners as well as a growing list of allied partnering organizations and intersecting networks;

  • Exchanges and collaborations with leading urban thinkers, practitioners, activists and experts through facilitated dialogues reframing dominant forms of urban research and planning. Our aspiration is to move the impact of programs beyond geographic borders in future cycles;

  • An ecosystem of support and care through an advanced transdisciplinary cohort of urban activists drawing from some of the most exciting social and cultural movements, a network of collaborative partners, logistical and skill-based support to build on your work, along with mentorship, solidarity and camaraderie.
