PUBLIC
DIALOGUES

DIRECT ACTIONS

April 2, 2024

Strikes, sit-ins, boycotts, blockades, resource redistribution – social movements incite a range of direct actions to achieve justice in our communities. In this public dialogue, we gathered four direct action practitioners to share hard-earned lessons from multiple fields of struggle: abolitionist and union militancies, Palestine solidarity, aiding asylum seekers, and mutual aid operations.

In conversation: Minahil Akbar (she/they); Briana Calderón Navarro (she/her); Lisa Fithian (she/her); Juan Carlos Ruiz (he/him)

A panel discussion taking place on a stage in a theater setting with an audience seated in front. The presentation screen behind the panelists reads "Speculative Futures / Abolitionist Histories." Several people are seated on stage engaging in conversation while audience members watch attentively.

Speculative Futures / Abolitionist Histories

DECEMBER 5, 2023

In this first installment of our Public Dialogues series, The Shape of Cities to Come Institute (SCCI) envisioned alternative futures for New York City by drawing on past and present models of liberation. Our conversation featured speculative fiction authors, people’s historians, and community organizers who foregrounded queer, trans, antiracist, and transnational solidarity visions to reconfigure our city.

In conversation: Eman Abdelhadi (she/they); M.E. O’Brien (she/her); Rosza Daniel Lang / Levitsky (they, she); Van Xelo (she/they).
